Oven RepairNo one can claim they have always had a perfect relationship with their stove. Prehistoric cooks used dirt pits to concentrate the heat for cooking meat and vegetables. Imagine the ancient chef merrily going along when the pit wall collapses or the heating stones go cold. They would have had to repair the pit by packing the dirt walls better or work on heating the stones more efficiently. Oven repair was borne on the day the cooking pit collapsed and someone had to repair the walls before people could eat.As time went on, the pit developed into a type of earthenware compartment. We use them today in the form of pizza ovens and crock pots. Repairs were not as easy as the pits still they needed a type of oven repair work. These ceramic ovens were often made of bricks or clay. The person who repaired the oven was often a type of mason who knew how to repair cracks in the masonry. Eventually people figured out how to build cast iron stoves. The wood burning stove, later the coal burning stove, often made the kitchen area too smoky if the exhaust was blocked. The temperature tended to vary if the wood was not fed to the fire in a timely fashion. The oven repair person would have had to know how to repair smoke ventilation problems and rusted areas on the stove. These days we use gas and electricity and our ovens are compartments made out of metal, surrounded by ceramic or stainless steel for insulation and decoration. Unlike our ancestral cooking pits, the modern day oven has lost the need for oven repair people who know how to keep the walls from caving in. What both have in common is the need to keep the temperature just right. In some ways prehistoric man and woman had it easier, if we ignore the hunting and gathering part, because it was easier to repair their cooking contraptions. Our modern problems tend to be more technical, requiring someone with more expertise than we would normally have. The electrical and gas powered ovens of today generally run into trouble when their heating components are damaged. Sometimes difficulties are something simple like the door not sealing properly. In gas stoves, the problem may be due to the thermostat or the igniter for the flame. The electrical oven has similar problems with the added possibility of one of the heating elements burning out. Either way, most of us need someone who is experienced in the repair of gas and electrical appliances. Unlike our ancestors, few of us can do the work ourselves. For thousands of years, cooks have had problems with their ovens, forcing them to either hire someone or repair it themselves. For certain types of cooking, if the oven is not working then the meal will not be served. From the fire pit needing better walls to the gas oven that will not burn, oven repair is an essential job for keeping people well fed and happy. |
